Milwaukee Bicycle Collective and Covenant Child Care Center recently teamed-up to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Milwaukee. Since I enjoy an odd middle ground position as the son of the beautiful Child Care Center Director and friend of MKE Bike Collective workers, I was lucky enough to play a small role in the fun and festive day at the Trike-a-thon.
It was a dripping hot day; absurd humidity and blazing Sun rays decided to join us. Thankfully, a sprinkler provided all with fun and relief.
It’s not often that I get to spend time around children; they are hilarious. I am always amazed by how kids react to the camera lens. Sometimes – especially with the really young and shy ones – all I have to do is point my camera at them and they freeze and smile and wait. Other times, asking them if I can take their picture results in a number of poses and requests to see how each photo turned out.
Milwaukee Bicycle Collective donated a bunch of bikes and helmets and scooters to the Trike-a-thon. Amazingly, they even made each of them available for the kids to keep – FOREVER!
That’s pretty awesome.
Several hundred dollars were raised. The total is still rising, too. At the Trike-a-thon, I learned that a few girls set up a Kool-Aid stand at home to raise money the day before – they brought all of the profits to donate.
We all had a great time goofing around and eating hot dogs and laughing. The day was summed up perfectly by a little girl coasting past me: “I’M HAVING FUN!!!”
I’m definitely going to try to learn from her example. Next time you are having fun, take step back to check the moment out like she did; then shout: “I’M HAVING FUN!!”
Preferably while coasting on a bike.

Pig, Beer, Hockey, & America
June 5, 2010
A very big thanks to the hosts of an incredible feast Memorial Day weekend.
I had the grand pleasure of sinking my teeth into this pig. And afterward, I digested him while sitting out on a deck, drinking High Life with friends, and watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Our gracious hosts can be seen below, preparing the beast for the feast.
God Bless America.

Full Speed into a Barbed-Wire Fence
May 6, 2010

Kato gained a few more scars on this trip to Independence, Wisconsin. One, a dog bite on the shoulder. And another cut just above his left eyelid from when he slammed into a barbed-wire fence at full speed.
His chest ripped the bottom wire loose from the post – the staple tore out – and the second wire cut him on the top edge of his eyelid. Merely a flesh wound. He took it like a champ. After he whimpered a bit – mostly startled – he was back to himself in no time.
The scab just fell off last night and it looks like he has a good scar, so far. Maybe this will bring him a bit more street cred.
In other news, a few wild turkeys experienced un-forecasted lead showers as they tip-toed through the early morning dew. And the tribe rejoiced.
